Technical Assessment

3D Detection

The “Technical Assessment” of Carapace faithfully detects every prefabricated armour unit of the breakwaters. The only input that is needed is a 3D pointcloud of the breakwater. The pointcloud acquisition can easily be done by: photogrammetry, LiDAR scanner (above water) and/or bathymetry (underwater).

Then, from the pointcloud(s), Carapace recognizes every single unit in place, for any kind of shape, for example: Accropodes I & II, Core-Loc, Tetrapodes, Ecopodes, Stabilopods, Dolos, Cubipodos, Xblocs and more! All the blocks are independently identified, each of them: placed and oriented, as closely as possible to the pointclouds.

Monitoring and Comparisons

All the armour units are defined and placed via mathematic regressions. The process ensures highly reliable results. Also, numerous thresholds are integrated to the calculation, guaranteeing:

  • High accuracy of the centres

  • High accuracy of the orientations of the units

The user can export and visualize all the results online, directly on a web browser. And, through the online viewer, the user can easily compare the positions and orientations of the blocks, at different moments. Especially, this technical assessment allows to check the compliance of the seawall and, if needed, to easily identify the armour units that have suffered too much movement, and/or rotation, and measure it.

Make the difference

The knowledge of the position and orientation of the armour units makes a true difference for: the construction company, the asset owner and/or the design offices. Whatever the state of the life cycle, Carapace provides:

  • Regular monitoring over time to spot incoming damages in order to take action in time and avoid heavy damages

  • Compliance check to certify the state of the asset at a given moment, for example: at the delivery

  • As-built 3D models that is more and more in a mandatory demand with the asset owner

All the information is reliable and can be used in case of litigation. Carapace is a patented solution.

Use case: As-built models during construction

Using an as-built model during construction allows to put the armour units in the course of the acquisitions (bathymetry and drone). It enables to the laying team to visualize the units as close to the possible as possible (underwater and above water) on which the next units will be placed during the next laying session. The interlocking is significantly improved. The movements between the initial position and the true position of the unit are radically reduced.

Compliance & Certification

Movement

Movement analysis between several moments and ground settlement check.

Interlocking

Interlocking analysis with check of the contacts in between the armour units.

Density

Density check, according to the technical recommendation, ratio: number of units in a given area, real versus theoretical.
